Invacare International Forum 2012

Under the theme of ‘Making Life’s experiences possible’, the Invacare International Forum 2012 welcomed 250 attendees to participate in, and listen to, a series of interviews and debates. |
Oscar Pistorius, also known as the ‘Blade Runner’, was the first double-leg amputee to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. Oscar shared his life experiences and achievements with the crowd, with a great sense of humor, giving a number of anecdotes from his childhood, that made him the person he is today. |

The debate covered the role that technology and product development has played in sports in recent years, and stressed the most important element in sports achievement; that of human performance. |
The discussion centered upon the question of integration for disabled and able-bodied people, at both professional and amateur sports levels. Another topic covered was the importance of having fun when training and support from parents, who are widely advised to treat disabled people as they do able-bodied siblings. |

The discussion looked at how to make the Paralympics as popular as the Olympics, and why some countries still give very little coverage to the Paralympics. Speakers also encouraged the media to takes “risks”, as Channel 4 did during the coverage of London 2012 Paralympic games, illustrating how really successful this can be, for the sport and broadcasters. |
