The wheelchair tennis World Team Cup (WTC) for the 27th edition of the competition took place from April 24th to May 1st on the hard courts of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. This year was the first time that the WTC was organized in South Africa, and it was a great pleasure for Invacare - as the international sponsor of this competition - to take part in the event as well.
In total 330 of the world's top wheelchair tennis players from 44 countries competed against each other to win medals in the following categories: 2 Men’s World Groups, 1 Women’s World Group, 2 Quad pools and 2 Junior pools.
Over the entire week, visitors got the opportunity to watch intense games. Also, our Invacare delegation - who came for the occasion from the Netherlands - supported the wheelchairs athletes by running the repair shop of the competition and thus offering free repair services. Participating in a clinic in the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Soweto was also a thrilling day offering chances to the disabled youth to experience tennis in Invacare Top End sport wheelchairs. Their happiness playing tennis and having so much fun won’t be forgotten.
Congratulation to all the participants and especially the champions!
The Netherlands claimed both the men's and women's titles in World Group 1 for the first time since 2006. As for the Men’s World Group 2, top-seated Japan won the title after defeating the USA in the final. Spain took victory over the Netherlands in the men's junior section, while the USA was successful in its defence of the quads title, beating Israel 2-1 in the title-decider.
