Invacare Vice President General Manager of Commercial Operations of Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Gordon Sutherland, was delighted to declare that: “Renewing our partnership with FIPFA is evidence of our commitment to Powerchair Football and FIPFA. We promote Powerchair Football to encourage an active lifestyle and we are glad to have FIPFA as a partner as we will collaborate on future product development.”
Speaking after the announcement, FIPFA President Hervé Delattre expressed the view that the Invacare partnership was a sound investment in the future of the sport for severely and multiply disabled athletes: “While FIPFA remains enormously grateful to the event sponsors of our recent FIPFA World Cup, Paris 2011, we count on Invacare for the long haul. Developing a sport using electric wheelchairs needs the commitment and expertise that are common to both partners.”
The most recent FIPFA World Cup took place in Paris in November 2011. For the first time, FIPFA received the support of UEFA and Michel Platini in person, through their partnership in the World Cup. As of today, 250 teams in 15 countries - and 10 more ready to joi -, 4000 players worldwide are involved. Next target is 800 teams in 25 countries!
FIPFA’s challenge as a Federation is not only to introduce the sport to potential players, but also to carry out advocacy in countries to have Powerchair Football introduced and to support the establishment of National Organisations. Invacare is proud of its role in Powerchair Football history alongside FIPFA.
Powerchair Football is for people who use a power wheelchair in their everyday life. Powerchair Football is played with two teams of maximum four players each and takes place on a basketball court with a ball of 33 cm - 13 inches. The players are in special power chairs that have a bumper to hit the ball and several other protections. The game follows the same rules as Football.
Upcoming FIPFA events are the first Asia/Oceania Cup planned for 2012 in Sydney, Powerchampions League in Europe, the Americas Cup, the first international training for youth aged 8 to 15 in Coimbra, Portugal, from October 28th, 2012 to November 3rd, 2012, and the next World Cup (2015).
